How to Make a Vision Board that Really Works and Doesn’t Suck

Your lack of vision board is ruining your life.

Okay maybe thats a little bit dramatic.

Not having a vision board won’t RUIN your life.

But it will most definitely prevent you from becoming your best version of yourself. 

Which I think is a pretty large drawback.

We all know what vision boards are, and why they’re important. So I’m not going to talk about that. You already know that a vision board provides a constant reminder of who you are aspiring to be, and what goals you are aspiring to achieve. But how do you make a vision board that really works, and makes an impact on your life?

I know you probably think you are “too cool” to need a daily, obvious reminder sitting on your wall. Especially if its all cheesy talking about your core desires and your biggest dreams. You might not want that stuff staring you in the face all the time right? Or maybe you just don’t want your partner or other family members to see your board. Or maybe you just don’t know WHO you want to be, or WHAT goals you want to work toward.

Thats all fine, but the sad thing is, that without that daily reminder in our face, our brains just can’t keep  our deepest goals and aspirations at the forefront of our minds. Life gets in the way.  There is always something more “urgent”, something of “greater” importance than whatever your life goals are. I mean they’re just life goals after all.

But unfortunately your brain isn’t somehow way more powerful than everyone else’s brain. You don’t have some special ability to keep your dreams on the surface of your conscious mind, even though nobody else can do it without extra help. Even the greatest achievers in the world keep vision boards (that is perhaps how they got to be the “greatest achievers in the world”).

So if you want to transition from living a “pretty good” life to living the greatest life of your dreams, you need to utilize the power and simplicity of a vision board.

Now, I finished my vision board last night. I am super proud, and it only took about 7 years on my “to do” list to finally cross it off.

Why did it take me so long to get around to making my vision board? Its not like I haven’t read self-development books that remind and urge me to create one. Its not like I am not a subscriber to Jack Canfield’s email newsletter (the father of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and HUGE vision board proponent).

Its not that I’m dumb either and didn’t “comprehend” the message – I knew and believed with my full heart for that entire 7 years in the importance of a vision board.

And its not that I didn’t have the time (even though I love to use time, specifically  being a mom to 3 young children, as an excuse). In the past 7 years, I spent an estimated 1750 hours watching TV and 2415 hours on Facebook (I estimated this at 1 hr of TV 85% of all days, and 1 hr on Facebook every day for 94% of all days). That adds up to 174 days of just TV and Facebook. Nearly half a year – and those numbers are modest (we all underestimate the time we spend on media, you do it too, don’t lie)!

I really think I could have spared 2 hours or so to create a vision board.

But I didn’t.

Until last night!

I spent the last week working on gaining clarity in my life – knowing my values, my goals, who I want to become, and where I want my career to go.

All these things NEED to be at the forefront of your mind, every single day. If they’re not, your brain will just make something up, or figure out things randomly along the way, and you’ll end up somewhere weird that wasn’t where you meant to go.

You won’t “just happen” to end up at your ultimate destination. Although that’d be nice if you could just stumble around in the dark aimlessly and then suddenly find all of your wildest dreams sitting there waiting for you.

So make a vision board!

And don’t just think to yourself “That sounds good. Maybe I’ll think about that tonight.” Actually schedule it in your calendar. Write “VISION BOARD NIGHT” – and get it done!

Here are some ideas to get you started (I talk more about these ideas in my first ever podcast, shared below):

  1. Start with your values. Don’t get weird and serious about this. Its not a competition to see who can overthink it the most. Don’t worry about being profound. Just think – what is most important to me in my life? And write it down! Write down 4-8 values.
  2. 3 words to describe yourself. Think of 3 words that you want to become. Think about the 3 words you want others to describe you as – the 3 characteristics that pop into people’s minds when they think about you. Find these words, and write them on your vision board. You need to be LIVING these 3 words every single day. I stole this idea from Brenden Burchard, who is amazing and you should read all his books.
  3. Short term goals – Add 3-6 short term goals. They can be personal or career oriented, or both. It can be learning a new skill, making a new friend, or finishing a project. It doesn’t matter to me what you choose. Choose something that makes you happy. Think within the next 6 months or so.
  4. Long term goals – go crazy with this. Sure, you can put long term goals that seem “achievable” in the next year or so. But make sure you add in 1-2 that are your ultimate dreams. What you envision as a “perfect life” or “having it all.” For me, my craziest goal is probably becoming famous. It seem dumb and nearly impossible, but I have it on there anyway.
  5. A fun goal! Lastly, choose at least one fun goal that can be measured. This is to keep your vision board from getting to serious and deep. Sometimes we naturally shy away from things that are “too intense.” So make it fun and approachable.
