Digital Products Are So Hot Right Now…

Everyone and their left butt cheek wants to release a digital product or course. And who wouldn’t? You get teach what you already know, one time via automated webinar/video course, to a bunch of people on the internet that you never have to meet or speak to, and get paid from it while you sit at home sipping a glass of wine and bingeing out on netflix.

But the ‘digital product bubble’ has to pop. Now that more and more “Just Anybody’s” are setting up web courses, and more and more people are making passive income off of teaching online courses about how to teach online courses, the market is getting crazy saturated.

Now, instead of the actual experts teaching digital courses, its just your goofy neighbor who knows a thing or two about knitting socks so they decided to toss up an online course about it and claim to be a professional, hot-shot sock knitter, complete with all the riches and fame that come along with dominating the knit-sock industry. Even though they really they work a 9-5 at Petco.

What I’m trying to say is, the amateurs are ruining it for the pros. At least, kind of.

The pros are still killing it.

But all the amateurs out their claiming to be hot shit, are really putting a bad spin on digital products. Now that its easy (and highly encouraged) for the Anybody’s to create an online course, buyers are getting more jaded, more weary, and more reluctant to buy from anyone.

I’m not saying that this is necessarily a bad thing. It might be good to widen the gap between the real pro’s, and the amateurs. This is going to make it SIGNIFICANTLY more challenging to receive “Pro” status, but hey, you don’t get nothin’ for free do ya?

But it does make me wonder “whats next?”

What happens when the public tires of digital products? What happens when its no longer “so hot?” What happens when every single topic you can think of is already taught in dozens upon dozens of digital courses? What happens when Facebook updates its algorithms, so its not so easy – or impossible – for the average Joe to pay for ad clicks? What then?

This is just something to keep in mind if you’re one of those people that is just joining the digital product bandwagon. I’m not saying you won’t be successful. Just don’t get too caught up in the hype. Remember, once its viral, you’re already too late. You’ve got to stay ahead of the pack if you want to find the gems.

And another thing: if you see a crowd rushing toward the bandwagon, you have a few options. You can join them of course. You can watch, but do nothing. Or, you can capitalize on the bandwagon-ers by selling them popcorn and soda.

And with my next idea, that is just what I’m going to do.
